Faves from Ghalib

I have been reading Gulzar’s book on the maestro of Urdu poetry recently. Need a place to keep some of the verses… may add translations later.

Na tha kuchch to Khuda tha, kuchch na hota to Khuda hota
duboya mujhko hone ne, na hota main to kya hota ?
———————-

ragon mein daudte firne ke hum nahi kaayal,
jab aankh hi se na tapka to fir lahoo kya hai?

———————-

Khuda ke vaaste pardaa na Kaabe se utha zaalim
Kahin aisa na ho yaa bhi vahi kafir sanam nikale….
———————–

Hum ko maloom hai jannat ki haqeeqat, lekin
Dil ke khush rakhne ko, Ghalib yeh khayal achha hai.

———————–

Un ke dekhe se jo aa jaati hai chehre pe raunak
Wo samajhte hain ke beemar ka haal achha hai.

———————–

Jala hai jism jahan, dil bhi jal gaya hoga
Kuredte ho jo ab rakh, justuju kya hai?

———————–

Ishq par zor nahi, hai ye woh aatish, Ghalib,
Jo lagae na lage or bujhae na bujhe

———————–

Mat pooch ke kya haal hai mera tere peechhe
Tu dekh ke kya rang hai tera mere aage.

———————–

kahoon kis se main ke kya hai, shab-e-gham buree bala hai
mujhe kya bura tha marna agar ek baar hota

———————–

Ye masaail-e-tasawwuf, ye tera bayaan ‘GHalib’ !
Tujhe ham walee samajhate, jo na baada-Khwaar hota…

———————-

Nikalna khuld se aadam ka soonte aaye hain lekin
Bahot be-aabru hokar tere kooche se hum nikle

———————-

Hui muddat ke Ghalib mar gaya, par yaad aata hai
Woh har baat par kehna, ke yun hota to kya hota…

  3. @Navdeep: Thanks, I like that one too.@Gurshi: Thanks, the lines are beautiful. In the book, the context of these lines is attributed to Ghalib’s reaction when invited by the beautiful Nawab-jaan to come and see her perform. @Karan: Thank you for the eternal lines.@Suppie: You know more about Ghalib than I do. You know more about Gulzar than he does. Thank you so much for sharing these words.

  4. Mohabbat mein nahi hai farq jeene aur marne ka,ussi ko dekh kar jeete hain , jis kaafir pe dum nikle, bahut nikle mere armaan , lekin phir bhi kam nikle

ek teer sa mere seene mein maara ki haaye haaye

dil hi to hai, na sango-khisht

  12. Nukta chii hai gam e dil,ke sunaya na bane
kya baat bane wahan, jahan baat banye na bane.
ishq par zor nahi hai yeh woh attish galib
jo lagaye na lage bhujhaye na bane

  13. @OP: A correction if you don’t mind,

Ishq par zor naheen, yeh hai woh aatish, Ghalib,
Jo lagaye na lage or bujhaye na bane

Notice “Bane” not “Bujhe”. Bujhe is introduced by Gulzar, AFAIK, in “Satranggi Re” song from Dil Se. Other one is,

Ghair phirta he liye, Yun tere khat ko ke agar
Koi poochhay ke ye kya he, tou bataye na bane

    Adaab.

  14. Matla’. . .. Just recalled after my former comment.

Nukta chein he gham-e-dil, us ko sunaaye na bane
Baat ban jaaye kuchh aisi, keh banaye na bane

  15. one of my favorite Shair by ghalib

Ganjinaa e maaani ka talism us ko samjhiyoo
jo lafz k Ghalib mere ashaaar mein ave….
